Zoe & Cloyd: Songs of Our Grandfathers with the Rich Mountain Pickers

This program is a partnership with BRAHM and the Appalachian Theatre of the High Country and made possible in part by a grant from America 250 NC, an initiative by the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources.

The innovative “klezgrass” music of Zoe & Cloyd springs from the rich traditions and complementary styles of fiddler/vocalist Natalya Zoe Weinstein and multi-instrumentalist/vocalist John Cloyd Miller. Descending from a lineage of klezmer and jazz musicians, Natalya trained classically in her home state of Massachusetts before moving south in 2004. John, a twelfth generation North Carolinian and grandson of pioneering bluegrass fiddler, Jim Shumate, is a 1st place winner of the prestigious Chris Austin Songwriting Contest and the Hazel Dickens Songwriting Contest. Based in Asheville, NC, Zoe & Cloyd delight audiences with soaring harmonies and heartfelt songwriting, seamlessly combining original bluegrass, klezmer, old-time and folk with sincerity and zeal. Visit Zoe&Cloyd to learn more.

The Rich Mountain Pickers are John and Orson Cornett, a father son duo from Boone, NC who love to play music together. John got his start within his family of musicians at a young age, mostly playing the drums and trumpet, but he eventually picked up the mandolin after moving to the area and realizing how rich the mountain music scene is here. Thirteen year old Orson got his start on the piano when he was four, and soon found he loved Appalachian music and instruments as well, including the mandolin, fiddle, and recently he’s been learning to play the dobro. Neither has had much formal training, but together, through the Jones House and the JAM program in Boone, and other local jams, they have brought themselves to a deeper understanding of Bluegrass, Old Time, and Celtic music, and in turn, the music has brought them closer to one another and to sharing the joy of the craft.

This concert will feature their full band performing the album Songs of Our Grandfathers and is free to attend! The Rich Mountain Pickers open the show!
