Bluegrass and Brass July 4th Musical Celebration featuring the Mountain Home Bluegrass Boys & King Street Brass
Join us for our annual celebration, now in its 30th year! Bluegrass & Brass is an evening filled with exceptional renditions of songs from both musical genres. Each group will perform standards from their respective styles, but the true magic happens when they combine their efforts. As Joe Shannon once described, “When they team up, it’s magic, kind of like Dixieland, but it’s Bluegrass Dixieland with an Appalachian heart.”
We’ll salute the troops and celebrate the power of music and community with songs like “The Stars and Stripes Forever,” “The Bugle Call Rag,” and other patriotic favorites, alongside traditional tunes and some fun musical surprises.
The Mountain Home Bluegrass Boys are a staple of Mountain Home Music, featuring two-time national bluegrass banjo champion Steve Lewis, Scott Freeman on mandolin, Josh Scott on bass, and twice-national studio musician of the year, David Johnson.
The King Street Brass Band is directed by trombonist Harold McKinney, a retired Appalachian State faculty member from the Hayes School of Music. This concert holds special meaning for McKinney, who served in the United States Air Force’s Tactical Air Command Band. Joining McKinney are alto trumpeter Patrick Whitehead from Washington D.C.’s Monumental Brass, soprano saxophonist Scott Kallestead, drummer Rob Falvo, and alto and bass trombonist Joe Brown, all from the Hayes School of Music. Katherine Smith of Greensboro will join King Street Brass on the French horn for this year’s performance.
Let’s come together to celebrate our country and community.
